This photo was chosen not for
its inherent beauty or importance, but because it represents a whole class of
extremely important images produced by the Mars Global Surveyor over the past
few years. The MGS pictures of valleys and canyons have revealed strong evidence
for erosion by some liquid, perhaps water, in the recent geologic past of Mars.
MGS transformed our view of
a seemingly barren landscape to one that holds hope for vast amounts of water
just under the surface and, maybe, some life. This photo, scientists said upon
releasing it recently, is one of the most detailed views ever taken of Mars from
above.
