During the 1980s and 1990s,
space exploration lost some luster for the public. We had stepped on the Moon.
Many times. Spacecraft had gone to Mars. Shuttle flights became routine.
On July 4, 1997, Mars Pathfinder
and its plucky little Sojourner rover became the first crafts to land on Mars
since the Viking era. They beamed home image after image. Most of those pictures
would never have been seen by the public were it not for the burgeoning Internet.
Millions of people followed the mission's progress online.
Pathfinder took us along, gave
us a virtual tour of the Red Planet in real time. As Jakosky puts it: "What better
way to show the excitement of exploration and of seeing a new place for the first
time.
