Although the recent round of heavy solar activity did not cause much disruption in the West, Chinese telecommunications were not so lucky Although the recent round of heavy solar activity did not cause much disruption in the West, Chinese telecommunications were not so lucky. The official Chinese news agency Xinhua reported earlier this week that radio communication was disrupted no less than three times in June. [quote] On the afternoon of June 2, an M-class solar flare interfered with radio transmission throughout much of China, producing static as far south as Hong Kong for a short period. Four days later, two stronger flares erupted, producing a flood of highly-charged particles that, according to the news agency, caused widespread interruption to radio communications. As with the first disruption, this new bout of solar interference hit regions in north China hardest, but the event still reportedly extended to the far south. A third, minor wave of interference occurred June 11. Although the capital Beijing was affected, this interruption was much shorter and covered a smaller territory than either of the previous events.
