The accompanying images were taken before and after Turkey's devastating earthquake of August 17. The photo directly to the right, taken on July 9, shows the city of Izmit, site of Turkey's largest refinery. The lower photo, taken on August 20, shows the city partly hidden by smoke, as the refinery blazed out of control because of the quake.

The images are from the French Spot 4 satellite, which is owned and operated by the French space agency CNES. (Photos from the Spot series of satellites are distributed commercially by Spot Image, a company in which CNES has a 35 percent ownership stake.)

Both CNES and the European Space Agency (ESA) have provided satellite photos to help disaster relief organizations in the quake's aftermath.
