NASA has selected Iowa State University to conduct research aimed at developing better food for astronauts as well as new food packaging and storage techniques for Earth-bound consumers.

The space agency announced yesterday that Iowa State will head the National Food Technology Commercial Space Center, a 5-year, $2.8 million project. The Center will focus on improving the shelf life and safety of food on long-duration space flights.

Such research will become more pressing as the U.S. space program shifts its emphasis from short shuttle flights to extended stays aboard the International Space Station, now under construction.

According to the space agency, improvements in astronaut food may lead to enhancements in packaged food products available to the public. NASA's Johnson Space Center will sponsor the research, and additional resources are expected from commercial partners.
