ikonos_denverfire_000616 Space Imaging's IKONOS satellite has captured images of out-of-control fires near Denver, Colorado that have reportedly destroyed nearly 40 homes. The fire has been burning for five days, burning more than 13,000 acres. IKONOS, the most powerful Earth-imaging satellite available to the public, captured these telling images of the fire. Areas in dark blue depict the heavily burned areas. Smoke and fire are shown as blue haze, while the red areas show the healthy vegetation, as-of-yet undestroyed.
The IKONOS satellite was launched last year as a eye-in-the-sky for hire, giving the public a chance to use high-quality images once only available from top-secret spy satellites. Space Imaging says it captured these images on the morning of June 14, and shared them with area firefighters. The company says its quick reaction time to environmental disasters can help governments plan their emergency responses. Space Imaging is a Denver, Colorado-based company, which markets satellite imaging.
