Andre Clay said this display was one of the best he has seen since he bought the digital camera used to take this shot. On March 20, he was returning from a night of photographing the "Ice Art Olympics" in Fairbanks when he noticed a glowing green aurora to the north.

"Being in the middle of downtown Fairbanks wasn't helping so I pulled off of the road near the airport as I thought it was dark enough," Clay said. "Fortunately, I had my tripod and began snapping away."

Clay has noticed an increase in auroral activity this winter, but warm weather has brought cloud cover that has prevented much viewing.

"I can tell the presence of the aurora through my amateur radio when pointed over the pole," Clay said. "[It] produces a raspy sound on the other received stations' signals."
