Galaxy ESO 418-008
is a young spiral galaxy 56 million light-years away and 15,000 light-years
across. While relatively nearby, this dwarf galaxy is typical of those seen
far away.
Stars are strongly segregated
by age. The older stars [red] are in the center, and the younger [blue] stars
are in the spiraling arms, which are still developing.
These small, young galaxies
may be the building blocks of galaxy formation. Our own Milky Way, for example,
is thought to have built its bulk by gobbling other galaxies.
