Cratersof the Moon Star Party -- Craters of the Moon National Monument, Idaho

The Craters of the Moon StarParty is held twice a year: First in June, to usher in the summer observingseason, and then in September to say farewell to it. This year's datesare June 23 & 24th and September 22nd & 23rd. The star party isheld at Craters of the Moon National Monument, between Arco and Carey,Idaho. The high-elevation desert climate, far from population centers,makes Craters of the Moon a premier dark-sky location. Last year,over 300 participants attended in June, while about 175 attended in September.Daytime activities include hiking, caving and geological interpretations.Craters of the Moon National Monument offers over 600 square miles (1550square kilometers) of unique lava geology and formations.

Fieldstar 2000 -- Vernonia,Oregon

The FieldStar 2000 eventwill feature various speakers with a ham-radio day portion starting onJune 25th. It is largely a camping event for tents, trailers or other RVs.Featured speakers are Marc Chamberlin, formerly of the MMT and Doctor MorlyBlouke (tentative), who designed the CCD devices used by the Hubble SpaceTelescope, plus many more speakers. There will be a star party Friday andSaturday nights.

Mason-DixonStar Party -- York, Pennsylvania

Held in an isolated areaof Spring Valley County Park, this will be the 11th annual Mason-DixonStar Party. The scenery is very pretty, and if the weather is agreeable,dark-sky observing sessions are known to be enjoyable and successful. Thisyear, keynote speaker Lawrence Marshall will present the lecture, "Lookingfor Asteroids."

June 24 - July 1, 2000

SouthernSkies Star Party -- Lake Titicaca, Bolivia

Now in its fifth year, theSouthern Skies Star Party will be held at an elevation of 12,500 feet (3,810meters) on the shores of Lake Titicaca, Bolivia. Taking place at the IncaUtama Resort Hotel (16 degrees South), also home to the local Alapachaobservatory with a roll-off roof and several telescopes, including 10-inchand 22-inch (0.3-meter and 0.5-meter) StarMaster Dobsonians. Low humidity,altitude, dark skies, stable air and a dry Bolivian winter offer clearsky observing to an easy 7th magnitude. Events include a public star partyfor local children, guest speakers from Cocimbamba, Bolivia, Caracas, Venezuelaand others. Local attractions at the site include nearby Incan Sun templeruins and the mystical Tiwanacu Sun Temple, along with many others.

RockyMountain Star Stare -- Colorado Springs, Colorado

The 14th Annual Rocky MountainStar Stare will be held in the Tarryall Mountains in Pike National Forest.The Colorado Springs Astronomical Society hosts this event at an elevationof 9000 feet (2,743 meters). Featured guest speakers, workshops, door prizes,contests, children's activities and a barbecue will be offered.
