Jupiters moon Io may deserve the name angry red planet far more than Mars

SPACE.com is proud to present our weekly Space Clips feature, displaying dramatic 3-D animations of the universe produced with our award-winning desktop astronomy program, Starry Night Pro. Each week, we will take you on a breathtaking tour through the wonders of the sky in high-resolution detail. Sofasten your seat belts.

Today, we present another video clip produced using Starry Night Pro's moviemaking tool. Starry Night visualizes the sky from the remote depths of space, far from Earth and even beyond the solar system. The moviemaking tool allows you to take images from Starry Night and create videos -- your way.

As volcanic hotspots go, its hard to surpass Jupiters moon Io.

Animated flyby of Jupiter's Moon Io .

With about three dozen active volcanoes spewing dust particles about the solar system, lakes of molten sulfur on its surface and an orbit that carries it through Jupiters lethal radiation belts, Io is one of the most inhospitable places in the local universe.

Active volcanoes were first discovered on Jupiters innermost moon in the late 1970s when the robotic planetary probe Voyager 1 passed close by. An arc of light peeking above the moons rim in one image was first thought to be an unknown jovian moon mostly eclipsed by Io. In actuality, the arc was a volcanic plume reaching high above the planet-sized moons surface.

Ios constant eruptions are caused by its close proximity to the moon's monstrous parent planet, Jupiter. The gas giants powerful gravity continuously kneads the rocky moon like warm dough, heating its innards until they turn molten and burst through the thin crust.

Next Week: The phases of the Earth as seen from the Moon.

The images and videos in Space Clips are produced using Starry Night software.
