Seeing Double

Late last year astronomers said they'd found a planet in a two-star system. The so-called binary stars are closer together than any that have ever been found to harbor a planet.

The second, relatively small star is about the same distance from the primary star as Uranus is from the Sun. Most stars have stellar companions, so this finding suggest planets might be more common than some researchers had thought.

The planet is estimated to be larger than Jupiter, and this rendering by Tim Jones speculates that it might have Saturn-like rings. [Story]
