Way Out World

In January, astronomers announced the discovery of a planet that was much farther away than any detected previously. It is 5,000 light-years away.

The finding was possible because of relatively low-yield planet-hunting technique, called the transit method, that spots those rare planets that happen to pass in front of their host star, as seen from our perspective.

The planet, as depicted here by David Aguilar, is about the size of Jupiter and orbits very close to the star. [Story]
