Alien Worlds through Artists' Eyes By Robert Roy Britt Senior Science Writer posted: 07:00 am ET 29 April 2003
Looking Back
Earthlings have always looked up, wondering what is out there. But what if
some astronomers on a planet around some other star gazed our way?
This is what they might see if they had an observatory equal to the Hubble
Space Telescope.
The view with an infrared camera would reveal a big donut-shaped ring of dust marked by characteristic signatures of some of our planets, like Jupiter and Neptune. The alien astronomers would not learn of Earth, but they might suspect that our world was possible given what they read in the dust. [Story]
While the other images in this presentation are perhaps more imaginative, this
one is a direct computer interpretation of actual dust observations, put together
by Jer-Chyi Liou. It illustrates how fine the line can be between science and
art.
