When Galaxies Collide
Two spiral galaxies can be seen colliding here in the heart of the Arp 220 galaxy. This provides the spark for a burst of star formation. The bright, crescent moon-shaped object is a remnant core -- a cluster of 1 billion stars -- of one of the colliding galaxies.
