Neil Armstrong
Pilot Neil Armstrong stands next to X-15 #1. This government rocket plane design was flown for nearly a decade not far from Mojave Airport, at Edwards Air Force Base in California. X-15 flew from June 1959 to October 1968. Several pilots earned their astronaut wings by flying to edge of space. Click to enlarge.
