This is a microscopic view of the tubular structures in a 25-micrometer-thick, polished slice of brown volcanic glass . These are thought to be the borings made by autolithotrophic microbes inside the oceanic crust. The sample was taken 1,230 feet (375 meters) below the sea floor of the Pacific Ocean west of Ecuador.
