On June 28, 1911, in Alexandria, Egypt, a series of loud bangs was heard over the village of Abu Hommos. About 88 pounds of rock from the Nakhla meteorite, which has since been identified as a piece of the planet Mars, rained from the sky in 40 pieces, one of which is on display in the newly renovated Arthur Ross Hall of Meteorites at the American Museum of Natural History.
