Galileo Galilei discovered four moons (Io, Europa, Ganymede and Callisto) circling Jupiter in 1610 with a telescope he built himself. Galileo's homespun astronomy observations also included the moon and Venus, and he helped show that the Earth and other planets revolved around the sun, and not the other way around.
