At age 95, Dr. Fred L. Whipple is the oldest and most eminent member of the CONTOUR Science Team. Whipple was the first to describe comets as dirty snowballs, a model shown to be correct when space probes visited Halley's Comet in 1986. The CONTOUR mission will launch in July 2002 to visit periodic comets 2P/Encke and 73P/Schwassmann-Wachmann. Click to enlarge
