The Sun's corona, photographed in August, 1999 during a total solar eclipse that was seen only in Europe. The corona is invisible during normal conditions because the surface of the Sun is much brighter than the mostly X-ray-emitting corona. The coronae of other stars, until now, were only detected with X-ray telescopes. Click to enlarge.
