MGS finally got a chance to capture images of the north polar cap after two years of sub-optimal conditions. This image reveals that sandy layers underneath harder, darker material, is weathering away. The result is a scale-like surface, where the darker, harder material, is supported by sand not yet blown away. The sand is blowing into dunes on the left side of the image, which is 1.9 miles wide.
