Light from a distant quasar is deflected by the gravitational field of an intervening galaxy. The quasar appears brighter, and multiple images of the quasar may be seen. The inset image, taken by the Japanese Subaru telescope in Hawaii, shows four images of a single distant quasar (blue) formed around the central image of an elliptical galaxy (red) that is acting as a gravitational lens.
