Satellites in geosynchronous orbit are approximately 22 thousand miles (35 kilometers) above Earth's equator, and stay synched above the same spot indefinitely. This special ring makes satellite communication economically feasible because the satellites do not have to be tracked. Currently there are over 800 crafts in geosynch, of which only half are in use. All unused crafts will be moved out of this orbit under the new guidelines. Click to enlarge.
