The Proteus is built for high-altitude, long-duration science or telecommunications missions. Designed by aero-imagineer Burt Rutan and built by Scaled Composites in Mojave, California, a version of Proteus is purportedly being flight tested to snag the X Prize $10 million purse for a passenger-toting suborbital vehicle.
