The first production-standard F-35 to fly was the F-35A, which made its first flight on Dec. 15, 2006. The F-35A is the conventional landing and take-off version of the F-35 Lightning II, and will be operated by the U.S. Air Force. Here, the first F-35A uses its afterburner in a steep turn.
