In 2004, NASA’s Genesis science capsule carrying solar wind samples and interstellar particles crashed within confines of the Utah Test and Training Range. The mishap was due to improper placement of recovery system components onboard the returning capsule. In September 2006 -- in honor of the two-year anniversary of the Genesis capsule’s return to Earth -- a permanent monument was installed at the exact spot the capsule plowed into terra firma.
