A coronal mass ejection (CME) on Jan. 17, 2005 saturated the camera on the orbiting SOHO spacecraft. The Sun itself is blocked out by the device so the area around it can be imaged. The flare was one of five that culumated with the strangely fast proton event of Jan. 20. Credit: NASA/ESA/SOHO
