A coronal mass ejection (CME) on Jan. 17, 2005 saturated the camera on the orbiting SOHO spacecraft. The Sun itself is blocked out by the device so the area around it can be imaged. Eruptions like this can create severe magnetic storms when they reach Earth. Credit: NASA/ESA/SOHO
