SURPRISE SOIL: These two images from Spirit's microscopic imager show soil barely moving under the instrument's weight. Scientists were surprised and said it suggests the soil is not dust-like, as they had expected, but somehow sticks together. They're trying to figure out why. The image shows a patch of Mars dirt about 1.2 inches (3 centimeters) wide.
