Observing galaxies in the early universe is a bit like trying to determine the number of residents in an apartment building by counting the number of lit windows. The most massive and oldest galaxies have not shown up in previous surveys because they're like buildings with mostly dark windows. The new survey found these dimmer, massive galaxies.
