STS 101 Mission Specialist: Jeff Williams

ORBITAL FLIGHT EXPERIENCE:

This is will be Williams' first flight on board a space shuttle. He will be conducting a spacewalk with Voss and conduct assembly work on the International Space Station:

Williams role with NASA began in 1987 with an assignment at Johnson Space Center. His primary function there was as a shuttle launch and landing operations engineer, a pilot in the Shuttle Avionics Integration Laboratory and chief of the Operations Development Office, Flight Crew Operations Directorate. NASA selected Williams in 1996. He trained for two years as a mission specialist. His first assignment was as a technician in the Astronaut Office Spacecraft Systems/Operations Branch. His second assignment as a mission specialist is with the STS 101 mission, the third Shuttle assembly mission dedicated to the assembly of the International Space Station.

Born: January 18, 1958. Grew up in Winter, Wisconsin. Spouse: the former Anna-Marie Moore. Children: two. Parents: Lloyd D. and Eunice A. Williams.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:

Graduated from Winter High School, Winter, Wisconsin, in 1976; received a Bachelor of Science degree in applied science and engineering from the U.S. Military Academy in 1980. He received a Master of Science degree in aeronautical engineering and an Aeronautical Engineering degree from the U.S. Naval Postgraduate School, both in 1987. In 1996 he received a Master of Arts degree in National security and strategic studies from the U.S. Naval War College.

Commissioned as a second lieutenant from the U.S. Military Academy in 1980 and designated an Army aviator in 1981. After serving as an Aeroscout Platoon Leader and Operations Officer in Germany, Williams completed a graduate program in aeronautical engineering. He was then selected for an assignment with Johnson Space Center. In 1992, Williams was selected for the Naval Test Pilot School. After graduation in 1993, he served as an experimental test pilot and Flight Test Division chief at Edwards Air Force Base, California. In 1995, completed the command and staff course at the Naval War College as an Army exchange officer. Williams has logged approximately 2,000 hours in more than 50 different aircraft.
