James Cameron has not started training in Russian space center
MOSCOW (Interfax) -- American
film producer/director James
Cameron, who received an Oscar for the blockbuster Titanic,
has not started training in the Gagarin Cosmonaut Training Center to fly
to the International Space Station in a Russian spacecraft.
Peter Klimuk, head of the
Gagarin Center, would not confirm for Interfax information released by
Western media stating that Cameron started training in Russia. He said
the center so far has no plans, and that no legal documents have as yet
been obtained.
A year ago, Cameron conducted
negotiations on a flight to Russia's now deorbited Mir space station and
even was granted a medical certificate, which allowed him to start training.
"In all likelihood, at the moment…talks about the flight are going on at
the level of James Cameron's personal plans," Klimuk said.
At the same time, a group
of foreign private individuals who wish to become space tourists are currently
undergoing medical examination at the Russian Institute of Medical and
Biological Problems, part of the Russian Academy of Sciences.
The candidates range in age
from young to middle-aged and are upper-level professionals in various
areas, the Institute said. Citing confidentiality, it refused to disclose
the names of the individuals or their countries.
