India's prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee called on countries to collaborate on developing space technology for peaceful uses, the Press Trust of India reported Friday

India's Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee called for global collaboration on the development of space technology for peaceful uses, the Press Trust of India reported Thursday.

"Space must become the newest frontier, not for an arms race, but for humankind's collaborative and common race for development," Vajpayee said at a space technology conference being held in New Delhi, PTI reported.

"Space belongs to all of us," he said. "Only through the widest possible global cooperation can we realize its vast potential gains."

India has tried to position itself as one of Asia's leaders in space technology, hosting scientists from around the region at space research centers.

In May of 1998, the United States imposed sanctions on India's space agency for assisting the development of India's nuclear weapons.

India strongly denies that claim, saying that the country's space program is strictly for non-military uses.

India conducted nuclear tests in mid-May 1998, triggering Pakistani nuclear tests later that month.
