WASHINGTON U.S. Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) and Rep. Sherwood Boehlert (R-N.Y.) will convene the first congressional hearing on the Columbia accident on Feb. 12.

McCain, chairman of the Senate Commerce, Science and Transportation Committee, and Boehlert, chairman of the House Science Committee, have asked NASA Administrator Sean OKeefe to appear before the joint committee next week to present testimony and respond to questions from lawmakers about the accident and response.

The hearing will be conducted jointly by the Senate Commerce, Science and Transportation Committee and the House Science Committees space and aeronautics subcommittee.

Pia Pialorsi, a spokeswoman for the Senate Commerce, Science and Transportation Committee, said the Feb. 12 hearing will be convened at 9:30 a.m. Eastern Standard Time.

NASA spokesman Michael Braukus confirmed Feb. 5 that OKeefe has been asked to appear before the joint hearing next week.
