U.S.-Russian Meeting on Space Station Crew Selection Canceled By Brian Berger SpaceNews.com Staff Writer posted: 04:48 pm ET 14 February 2001

ALBUQUERQUE, N ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. -- A three-day meeting between Russian and U.S. International Space Station officials to discuss crew selection issues -- including the proposed commercial flight of American millionaire Dennis Tito to the station -- has been canceled, according to NASA spokesman Dave Drachlis. The Russian space agency Rosaviacosmos last month signed a $20 million contract to launch Tito to the station aboard a Russian-built Soyuz spacecraft slated to bring a new crew and fresh supplies to the station. However, Titos flight has prompted objections from some European and American government officials who said Russia cannot unilaterally decide to transport a tourist to the station. The so-called Bilateral Crew Operations panel had been scheduled to meet at NASAs Johnson Space Center in Houston Feb. 14-16. Drachlis said the meeting was canceled because the Russian delegation was unable to attend. He did not elaborate. Drachlis said NASA is trying to reschedule the meeting, which will include discussions on commercial activities aboard the station in addition to crew selection criteria.
