Mir Emergency Crew Has Been Composed

On December 27, Rosaviacosmos (the Russian Aviation and Space Agency) approved two of the most experienced Russian cosmonauts to serve as the so-called "emergency crew" for Mir. The mission commander will be Gennady Padalka and the flight engineer will be Nikolai Budarin.

Padalka and Budarin -- who recently served as the contingency crew for the International Space Station -- will fly to the station if Progress M1, which is supposed to deorbit Mir, fails to dock to the outpost. In this case the crew will steer the Progress to the station and assure its safe docking.

The previous "emergency crew" consisted of mission commander Salizhan Sharipov and flight engineer Pavel Vinogradov.
