Kvant was added to the Mir core's aft port in 1987Kvant-1 is Mir's 11-ton astrophysics research lab, but it is also equipped for experiments in biotechnology and space observation. The module carries six gyroscopes in its interior, which allow Mir to orient itself in space without using precious onboard propellant.
The Kvant-1 Module The smallest of Mir's modules, Kvant-1 was originally intended for the earlier Salyut-7 space station, however, it was delayed until Mir was launched. Kvant-1 docked in 1987 to the station's aft docking port. Since then, the Kvant-1 docking interface has been used to dock Soyuz and Progress spacecraft, as well as to transfer propellant from the transport spacecraft into the core module's tanks. Kvant-1 has a Roentgen X-ray telescope with four instruments and an ultraviolet telescope. Those on board use the instruments to study the physics of galaxies, quasars and neutron stars. Ground engineers also can download information from the instruments when the station is unoccupied. The module also has technology for biotechnology experiments, such as anti-virus research.
