Spacehab signs with Canada for station access

Seeking to expand its access to space for commercial resale, Spacehab Inc. is reserving an option to lease from Canada experiment space aboard the International Space Station.

In exchange, the company will let the Canadian Space Agency have partial use of a device to grow protein crystals, which is slated to fly on the shuttle next year.

"This is the first commercial opportunity on the space station," said Spacehabs Chris Martin, who helped negotiate the deal.

The agreement gives Spacehab an option to lease one locker for up to one year from the Canadian Space Agency, which has access to 2.3 percent of non-Russian research space aboard the station. Canada is contributing a robotic arm and crane to the $60 billion outpost.

If the stations development continues on schedule, Spacehab would be able to begin using the station for commercial space experiments in mid-2001.

Martin said Spacehab will most likely pursue similar agreements with the other station partners, which include NASA and the European, Japanese and Russian space agencies.

"The Canadian Space Agency is the first to offer this opportunity," he said.
