Japenese Experiment Module

Japanese Experiment Module

The major Japanese contribution to the ISS, scheduled to be launched in 2002 and 2003, includes four parts:

Experiment Logistics Module

Designed to carry pressurized and unpressurized cargo. It will be delivered first.

Pressurized Module

The primary Japanese contribution to the ISS. Included in the module will be the initial experiments that will be housed in the racks delivered to the Experiment Module

Remote Manipulator System

A 32.5-foot long robotic arm attached to the Pressurized Module that will be used for placing and manipulating experiments on the lab's "back porch," the Exposed Facility. It will be delivered to the ISS with the Pressurized Module.

Exposed Facility

This is the external platform for up to 10 unpressurized experiments that will be exposed to some or all of space's hostile variables: temperature extremes, unfiltered radiation, lack of oxygen, and others.
