NASA readies to do business on ISS module

HOUSTON NASA officials are gearing up to make a deal on the habitation module on the International Space Station.

The agency hosted a commercialization conference here last week to drum up support from private partners to fund part or all of the module to be launched in November 2004.

NASA has funds to build a baseline model, but seeks private money to build an improved version. The agency also has to decide on which model to build a traditional metal-skinned version or an inflatable type developed at Johnson Space Center.

Starting Friday, NASA is expected to post speech transcripts and other information from the conference on its website.

Daniel Tam, the NASA administrators special assistant for commercialization, said he hopes to have a deal signed before the end of October.

Tam also set the following deadlines:

September 10: NASA responds to specific questions from potential commercial partners.

September 17: Preliminary business plans submitted to NASA by potential commercial partners.

September 24: Joint working sessions between NASA and interested parties begin.

Mid- through late October: Signed memorandum of understanding binding all parties.
