Endeavour move still on hold

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. With time to spare, NASA managers postponed a decision to move shuttle Endeavour out of its processing hangar while an investigation continues into a potentially dangerous electrical short that occurred during the last shuttle launch.

Endeavour, which is slated to fly a radar-mapping mission next month, is now scheduled to be towed out of its hangar no earlier than Friday, said Kennedy Space Center spokesman Joel Wells.

"Theres still no impact to the launch date," said Wells, adding that the shuttle has eight extra days in its processing schedule.

The next phase of launch preparations for Endeavour, which is targeted to fly on September 16, takes place in the Vehicle Assembly Building, where the orbiter is hoisted vertically and attached to external fuel tank and two solid rocket boosters.

Managers have held off moving Endeavour until questions about an electrical short circuit that occurred during Columbias July 23 liftoff are resolved. Engineers are reviewing inspection records and lab reports to determine if the flaw the triggered Columbias short circuit has implications for the rest of the fleet.
