Triumphs and Tragedies Behind Launch 'Fireworks'

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. -- Less than 30 minutes had passed since Boeing lost its first Delta 3 rocket in a spectacular ball of fire during an August evening in 1998.

Stuck at the Cape Canaveral press site, I called home and my then-10-year-old son, Christopher, answered. We talked briefly about what had just happened. He was born at Cape Canaveral Hospital and has lived his whole life on Florida's Space Coast, but he had never seen a rocket disintegrate in the sky -- until now.
