apollo13_public_impact_sidebar_000331 World space activity increased in 1970 for the first time since 1966 - There were 114 successful launches of 130 payloads, as compared to 110 launches of 124 payloads the previous year.
- Of the 1970 world total, the United States launched 28 boosters carrying 36 payloads. The U.S. military accounted for 17 launches of 21 payloads.
- The U.S. launched the largest number of payloads that year since 1960.
- There were 11 NASA orbital launches. Eight of these were for non-U.S. satellites.
- The U.S.S.R. continued to dominate space, with 81 launches of 88 payloads.
Other world space events in 1970 included: - Japan and China became the 4th and 5th nations to orbit satellites.
- Italy launched a satellite.
NASA in 1970 - The NASA budget continued to decline, falling lower each year during the period from 1969 to 1974.
- Apollo was NASA's largest budget item until 1973.
