NEW YORK -- When the Soviet Union lofted Sputnik 1 in October of 1957, it served as the starting gun in one of the most important races in human history.

Now 43 years later, the United Nations celebrates the achievements of space explorers with the first annual World Space Week. The celebration will run from October 4, the date of the launch of Sputnik 1 in 1957, to October 10, the signing date of the Treaty On Peaceful Uses of Outer Space in 1967.

SPACE.com's Chairman and CEO Lou Dobbs is serving as the master of ceremonies for the event.

"We created SPACE.com to cover the biggest story of our age and deliver the wonder and adventure of space to the world," said Dobbs. "I am honored to be part of this international celebration of space and its contributions to our life on Earth."

The goal of the annual event is to raise public awareness of the benefits to us ground-dwelling humans of all aspects of the space programs of the world. It is also an opportunity for educators to focus their studies on the topics of space, space exploration, astronomy, and human spaceflight.

Events will be held not just in New York City, but at locations all around the world such as Australia, Mexico, Romania, Spain and Morocco.

More information can be found at the official website, www.spaceweek.org.
