Russia_China_talks_000525 In another sign of continuing space cooperation between Russia and China, Russian Aviation and Space Agency director Yuri Koptev is leading a delegation of space officials visiting China this week. A group of Russian space officials left for China on Tuesday and was expected to spend the rest of the week there. The Russian Aviation and Space Agency (Rosaviacosmos), would not comment on the conference's agenda. But on Wednesday at a press conference in Moscow, Deputy Prime Minister Ilya Klebanov said that Chinese participation in developing the space-based global positioning system -- known as GLONASS -- would be discussed. GLONASS is the Russian equivalent of the U.S. Global Positioning System ( GPS). Sources in the Russian space industry also said that cooperation in the Chinese piloted space program would be considered. China reportedly has expressed interest in renting the resources of the Mir space station and even the possibility of docking its own piloted spacecraft to the orbiting Russian outpost. In the past China has purchased hardware from Russia, who helped them develop a spacecraft for their own piloted space program. Images of the Chinese spacecraft, flown in its first un-piloted test mission last year, showed a striking resemblance to Russia's piloted Soyuz vehicle.
