The Silicon Valley could evolve into a Silicon Universe under an agreement signed this week by the heads of NASA's Ames Research Center and nearby San Jose State University to plan future R&D and technology commercialization

NASA Ames Research Center will extend its reach deeper into the Silicon Valley under an agreement signed Thursday to collaborate with San Jose State University on education projects and information technology R&D.

Ames already has partnerships with three other area campuses near its site in Mountain View, California. It will collaborate with university staffers to develop K-12 science, math, engineering and technology programs, as well as a teacher institute and graduate, credential and extended education programs.

Ames and San Jose State also will develop information technology for disaster research and applications, such as satellite remote sensing, signal processing and instrumentation.

"Our goal is to develop a world-class, shared-use R&D campus by partnering with industry, academia and nonprofits in the NASA Research Park," NASA Ames Director Henry McDonald said in a prepared statement.

Hands-on education and training with some of Silicon Valley's high technology companies at the NASA Research Park also is a goal, said Nabil Ibrahim, San Jose State University associate vice president.

"The partners will work with local colleges, such as Foothill-DeAnza Community College and the National Hispanic University, to develop the work force of tomorrow with an emphasis on under-represented minority groups," Ibrahim said.
