As recent launches by Japan and India have shown, space exploration is no longer just for the major powersAs recent launches by Japan and India have shown, space exploration is no longer just for the major powers. With Krishnaswamy Kasturirangan at its head, the Indian space program is quietly earning itself a world-class reputation. The Times of India calls it "The Kasturirangan magic." As chairman of the Indian Space Research Organization, Kasturirangan has overseen five successful launches, including May's liftoff of a Korean and a German satellite. That launch made India one of a few countries with the capability to deliver commercial satellites. On August 11, Kasturirangan was awarded the H.K. Firodia award for excellence in science and technology, for his contribution to positioning the Indian space program as one of only six major programs in the world. Kasturirangan is looking to the future in more than one way. His latest mission is to convince Indian youngsters to opt for careers in space science, according to the Times of India. And if his predecessor's experience is any sign, Kasturirangan may have a future in the international arena. ISRO's former head, Dr. U.R. Rao, presided over the United Nations conference on Exploration and Peaceful Uses of Outer Space (UNISPACE) held in Vienna in July.
