"We wanted to demonstrate something tangible to political leaders and NASA, something that shows real support for space exploration," said Brian Chase, the societys executive director, in an interview. Since the loss of the Columbia and its crew, critics have flooded the airwaves to speak against the need for manned spaceflight, he added. The petition is available at the National Space Society website -- www.nss.org -- where space supporters can put their name, contact information and their personal views concerning NASAs space program. Over the next few weeks, the society will collect as many signatures as it can, then present them to congressional leaders, NASA officials and the White House. "We dont believe that anything critics say will derail the space program," Chase said. "But we want political leaders to know how deep the public resolve is to keep going. We want them to get the message." Along with the petition, the society encourages individuals to write to local media and their elected officials to express their support. Businesses, organizations and individuals can also add links to the petition on their websites.
