Hed hereExperimental spacecraft and developing future systems are the focus of Space Transportation Day 99 at Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Ala. According to the organizers of the Oct. 27 event, goals and programs of opening space to commercialization and exploration will also be discussed. New technologies being developed to reduce launch costs will also be highlighted, according to a NASA official. "Experimental vehicles under development and poised for flight today are the testbeds for the materials, structures, technologies, manufacturing techniques and operational concepts of the future," said Dr. Row Rogacki, director of the Space Transportation Directorate at Marshall. Rogacki added these vehicles would pave the way for more reliable and safer operations and would reduce launch costs to about $1,000 per pound. Experimental craft such as the X-33, X-34 and X-37 will be discussed along with space shuttle upgrades and the International Space Station propulsion module.
