nasa_package_011016 CAPE CANAVERAL - At least eight workers at Kennedy Space Center are undergoing medical examinations after discovering a powdery substance from a suspicious package Tuesday, NASA and United Space Alliance officials said. A second package arriving at the Cape Canaveral Air Force Station also is being examined, but few details are available, Air Force spokesman Maj. Mike Rien said. A mailroom clerk at the Assembly Refurbishment Facility at Kennedy Space Center noticed a powder on his pants from a package he was handling, said KSC spokesman Bill Johnson. The base Hazardous Materials team and security and safety officers cordoned off the mailroom and adjacent areas. The package and powder will be sent to either a state or federal lab for testing, Johnson said. The man is an employee of the United Space Alliance. Seven other employees who were in the mailroom or nearby also are being studied, USA spokesman Jack King said. The discovery came a day after the mailroom workers were trained on how to handle suspicious packages amid fears of anthrax packed in envelopes. NASA also is examining the route the package took while on the base and could order tests on more workers. "These things go through several mailrooms," Johnson said. Kennedy Space Center officials routinely examine all packages coming into the base, including using X-ray machines, Johnson said. A powder discovered Sunday night at the Patrick Air Force Base commissary did not contain anthrax or other suspicious substances, Rien said. Published under license from FLORIDA TODAY.
